Hidden Art Cornwall in collaboration with the 3D Digital Research Cluster at University College Falmouth offered Cornish designer-makers a unique opportunity to go digital.

The project comprised of a digital demo day and a design research competition under the brief Repeat and Variation.

The demonstration day on Thursday 5th January 2006 at Tremough, included an introduction to the laser cutter, the vinyl cutter, the desktop mill, the ceramic decal printer, the jacquard digital loom and the digital textile printer.

Repeat and Variation
Cornish designer-makers were invited to submit a proposal for a product or series of products they would like to develop using one (or more) of the above pieces of digital equipment.

From the submitted proposals five designer-makers were selected to attend a week long workshop with 3D Digital Research Cluster at University College Falmouth involving; CAD training, experimentation with digital technologies, critical discussion and making prototypes. Submissions were assessed on the basis of

  • The Repeat and Variation brief.
  • The level of innovation in the use of technologies.
  • The potential for development through experimentation.
  • Whether the project is feasable in the timescale available.

The five shortlisted designer-makers were: Antonia Macgregor, Jethro Macey, Hannah Maughan, Ismini Samanidou and Lucy Turner of Beef Design.

Hidden Art Cornwall exhibited the resulting products and the story behind them at the first Hidden Art Cornwall Design Fair at Godolphin House, Cornwall. Click here to see images from the Repeat and Variation exhibition.
