Having taught art and design for 20 years, I have been a specialist in different media from ceramics, to painting and drawing and now metal. I make work for different markets, wall hangings and sculpture, tableware, interior accessories, trophies for presentation or function. Potentially I can work in various metals but am now exploring pewter, finding new applications. I sometimes introduce colour as paint, and metal powders and tone with patination or burnishing, making significant expressive marks and bringing out the natural qualities of the material. Subtle moulding, forming or mark-making produce a play of light on the surfaces, an animation similar to a reflective kinetic effect and I utilise this on my pieces. The Zen approach of simplicity, economy of statement, reserve and control influences my work. Imbrued by life and the natural world, these provide reference to capture an ‘essence’ through a refined and honed statement, to evoke an atmosphere of beauty and serenity in each object.
