Equipment available includes:
  • CNC Milling: (Bridgeport 3/4/5 Axis Milling Machine VMC1000): Reproduces 3D digital designs by milling from solid blocks of material such as plastic or metal. Bed size: 1000 x 600mm
  • Rapid Prototyping (Z Corp 3D Printer): Builds physical forms from 3D digital files. Bed size: 203 x 254 x 203mm
  • 3D Laser Scanning (Roland Picza 3D Laser Scanner): Scans physical forms to originate 3D files. Scannable area 406 x 230 mm
  • Laser Cutting and Engraving: Uses 2D digital files to precision cut sheet materials such as acrylic, leather, plywood, fabrics etc. Bed size: 990 x 730 mm
  • Digital Fabric Printing: Takes 2D digital designs and prints them onto the surface of selected fabrics. Width up to 900mm
  • Jacquard Power Loom Weaving: Takes 2D digital designs and replicates them into woven structures.
  • Ceramic Decal printing: Takes 2D digital designs and replicates them as transfers that can be permanently fired onto ceramic surfaces. Printed on A3 sheets

Metropolitan Works is a Digital Manufacturing Centre – providing new technology for prototyping, manufacture, research and experimentation. All facilities are available as a bureau service with charges based on production time. Some facilities are also available for hands-on use.

Equipment includes: 3D Scanner objects up to 4800mm long, Digital Printer width up to 1650mm, Laser Cutting up to 1220 x 2440mm, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) machine and a 3D printer in rigid plastic up to 620 x 340 x 340mm. (CNC) Routing the 3-axis router cuts shapes from sheet material up to 1220 x 2440mm. The 5-axis router can produce parts up to 2440 x 4880 and 850mm high
 
RapidForm brings together the Royal College of Arts’s digital design, prototyping and manufacturing technologies and makes them available to individual designers; access to the facilities is through a bureau service.
