We caught up with glass designer-maker Jodie Bishop to talk about the Lighten Up wall lamps she will be showcasing at 100% Design.
What was your inspiration for the design?
I love the way light can bring glass to life, causing it to glow or create fantastic shadows, and I strive to capture these qualities within my own work. The shapes of my lamps are quite organic and evolved as I started playing around with forms with the glass.
The Lighten Up wall lamps are designed as individual units making them adaptable to be arranged in clusters, straight lines or cascading down a wall. When I was designing the lamps I was looking at other lighting such as lanterns and antique chandeliers and liked the idea that the client could build their own chandelier or wall lighting installation by commissioning the colour and number of units they wanted.
How are the lamps made?
It is a real combination of traditional glass making techniques and modern technology. The hand blown glass pods are ground, polished and sandblasted to diffuse the light, the glass shades are water jet cut before being slumped in a kiln and I outsource the bespoke fittings, which are made locally from stainless steel.
What are you looking forward to at 100% Design?
I’m hoping to make some sales by expanding my contract market and my contacts, as well as establishing possible new manufacturing contacts. I’m also looking forward to spending some time in London and taking in the whole London Design Festival.
How important is being a member of Hidden Art Cornwall to you?
There are loads of brilliant designer-makers working in Cornwall and Hidden Art Cornwall has really helped to bring them all together and build a strong creative network here. It’s also great to get the opportunity to exhibit at national events such as 100% Design with the support from Hidden Art helping to make it all a little less daunting!
