Ironically I started making furniture after attending Edinburgh College of Art, where I got a post-graduate year and a travelling scholarship in drawing, painting and print making. Although I did Fine Art my enthusiasm has always been for “making things”. After a short stint in teaching and as an Engineering Draughtsman, I set up my own business in Kent designing and making furniture. Thirty years ago, married with two children, I brought my business to Wadebridge in Cornwall and although commissions can be seasonal, prospective customers manage to seek me out, usually recommended by word of mouth or having seen my style of design elsewhere and 'hitting the right spot for them'. In the quieter months I fill the showroom with furniture and recently, in the last few years, drawings and paintings. My furniture certainly points toward the decorative. I enjoy a simplistic overall design to accommodate an eye-catching, interesting and concentrated panel of intense inlaid work, which has become my trade mark. This probably echoes the painting training and the idea of framing a statement. The work I make can vary between enormous tables to small inlaid boxes and treen, turned work, etc. Chests of drawers and boxes of drawers are my speciality as drawer fronts lend themselves to decoration with different woods, as well as door panels. Banding on tables or cabinet tops also have a distinctive quality |
